Southern York County School District
Band Booster Meeting
January 7, 2008
Attendees:
Donette Yeilding, Christian Poole, Lynne Hood, Donna Schriver, Cheryl
Dunkin-Yost, Lorna Deibert, Pat Macomber, Cheryl Rosenberger, Debbie Auberger,
Jeannine Williams, Bethany Meyer, Bonny Lutter, Bonnie Homes.
Meeting called to order, welcome.
Secretary’s Report
Minutes from December meeting approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Monthly report attached.
Four students have already reached the $250.00
threshold. Once the student account reaches $250.00 for the school year, that
student gets 100% profit from any further fundraising in their account. (For
most fundraisers, the profit is split between the general account and the
student account.) We need to make people more aware of this policy, just in
case there are any who might not read and remember every detail of the
handbook! Donette Yeilding will send an email to parents as a reminder.
Director’s Report
- We have received the picture from marching band
championships. It has been attached to the plaque.
- Indoor Guard. We have gotten practice times in
district gyms from Mr. Abbott. Neither the dates nor the times are great.
The guard will not compete in KIDA this year. They will practice and
perform @ SMS and SHS concerts and possibly perform at a few KIDA events in
the exhibition category. The main purpose is to train for marching season.
It was suggested that they try to schedule performances at basketball games,
baseball games, school carnivals, Glen Rock street fair, etc. If anyone
knows of a possible performance venue, please let Mr. Poole know.
Lynne Hood will check with Shrewsbury Elementary PTO. Practices will
generally be on Fri. nights. Lesson learned: get on gym calendar EARLY for
next year.
- Indoor Drum Line This also will be a training
opportunity for marching season. The drum line will not compete in KIDA,
but will perform at concerts and other events much like the guard. It was
suggested that New Freedom is always looking for marching bands for their
parade and they would probably welcome the drum line, perhaps the guard,
too. Pat Macomber, who serves as a judge for the New Freedom parade,
will check into this and keep Mr. Poole informed. The drum line will
practice on Wed. evenings starting Jan. 23.
- Winter Concert, Jan. 29 The concert will
feature the concert and jazz bands. Parents of freshman and sophomores are
asked to donate cookies to be served after the concert.
- Jazz Band The jazz band is now practicing
after school on Tues. and 7-9 Thurs. evenings to accommodate the athlete’s
schedules.
- Cavalcade of Bands Mr. Poole’s time was
well-spent at last month’s Cavalcade meeting, as they are making some
changes to the rules which could be important for our marching band. One
such change would be to present color guard and percussion awards at each
show, which Mr. Poole strongly supports because these sections practice so
much more than the rest of the band. The sliding rule of category
membership may also change, which would even the playing field for all
competitors. They are also considering eliminating the color guard in the
head count, only counting musicians. Mr. Poole recognizes the importance of
taking an active role and advocating for changes which would benefit all
marching bands.
Fundraising
- Market Day moving along fine. Next order
deadline, 2/6/08, delivery date 2/12/08.
- Holiday Fundraisers We earned approximately
$3,000.00 profit between Pellman’s, luminaries and poinsettias.
- Marching Season DVD’s We’ve sold 75 DVD’s to
date. This fundraiser has very low overhead and is almost pure profit.
Janice Eason, the student who produced the DVD, has already volunteered to
do it again next year. We will give DVD’s to Sue Meyer (backdrop artwork),
Southern Turf (for use of tractor) and Bubb Insurance (advertising) as a
thank you. We need to advertise the DVD better next year. Lorna Deibert
is working on this.
- Fundraising awards—Mr. Poole will distribute in
class.
- Pellman’s Spring Sale Michelle Spurlock
has offered to chair.
Jazz Fest We currently have 2 high schools and a
middle school committed in addition to our SHS and SMS jazz bands. Mr. Poole
will contact Hereford high school. Pat Macomber will give Mr. Poole a
standard letter.
Winter Concert – Jan. 29
- We need posters out.
- We will contact the Luthern Home so they can bring
residents if they want to come.
- We need parents of juniors and seniors to donate
cookies to be served after the concert. The parents of freshmen and
sophomores will be asked in the Spring.
- The pictures of district band members have been taken
and will be displayed at the concert.
Nominating Committee Pat Macomber and Jeannine
Williams have volunteered, but we need one more member. They will look for a
volunteer and present a slate of potential officers at the Feb. meeting.
Handbook Revisions These must be done by May so that
the new handbook can be distributed. Anybody who has suggestions is encouraged
to send them to Donette Yeilding. The
new handbook will be posted on
www.warriorbands.org. (Brian Rocks!!)
Mandatory parent meeting It has been suggested that
we host a meeting for parents of all band students, possibly in May for the
following school year. Ideas include: centers, sign-up sheets, packets, review
of rules, student accounts, schedules and all pertinent information, perhaps
have some students perform.
SYCSD Foundation Donette Yeilding and Pat Macomber
have volunteered to represent the band boosters at the Foundation meetings.
Donette will attend on 1/8. At this point we’re expecting the Foundation to
match about $2,000.00 toward the Steger scholarship, money we hope to raise at
the basket bingo.
Championship Shirts/Jackets
- Order forms for shirts will be sent home soon.
- Jackets: Mr. Poole and Bethany Meyer
will meet with Paula at Pins and Needles to discuss a design for the jacket.
Students will be told to go directly to Pins and Needles to order their
jackets.
Basket Bingo
- The jazz band will play 2 or 3 songs at intermission.
- Mr. Poole will check the school web site to
make sure date and time is correct.
- Letters were sent home today.
- Bethany Meyer is working on a menu.
- We need kitchen help. Linden and Lorna
Deibert have volunteered.
- We need EVERYONE to sell tickets. Pre-paid tickets
will have 2 chances for a door prize, tickets sold at the door will have 1
chance.
- We need donations of food and beverages.
- Kids can play bingo but an adult must accept prizes.
- Inclement weather policy: in the event of a
cancellation, all 20 baskets will be raffled. Pre-paid tickets will be
entered in the raffle. Cancellation will be posted at
www.warriorbands.org and on channel 8 WGAL.
- Lorna Deibert will get the key for the NF
Community Center on Jan. 19.
- Details coming together nicely.
- Donations need to be received by this weekend (Jan.
12/13) in order to be included in the program.
- Bethany Meyer is working on the program.
Lorna Deibert and Bethany Meyer are going to
meet and review the success of each fundraiser in order to plan for the future.
Next meeting: Mon, Feb. 4, 7pm in the SHS band room.
